About

Biography

I am an NRF Fellow and Presidential Young Professor (Assistant Professor) at the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, National University of Singapore (NUS), working at the intersection of public health, machine learning and Bayesian modelling.

I am Deputy Director of the Centre for Epidemic Research & Modelling (CERM) and of the AI for Public Health Programme at SSHSPH, and Assistant Director of the PhD Programme at the NUS Institute of Data Science (IDS). I co-founded the Machine Learning & Global Health (MLGH) Network, a multi-country, multi-organisation network doing fundamental research in machine learning for global health.

My research develops and applies statistical machine learning to the broader and messier world of science and public policy — especially global health. I build flexible, scalable models for spatiotemporal data such as epidemics (COVID-19, malaria, dengue, HIV), pathogen genomics, human mobility and crime. For my doctorate I built models for the evolution of popularity in social media, focused on point processes with both classical machine learning and modern deep learning.
